Charlotte is an artist, wildlife photographer, writer and naturalist based out of the Pacific Northwest of British Columbia. Growing up not far from the rugged coastline, with a forest in her backyard, Charlotte developed a keen love of the natural world from a young age. Some of her earliest memories include walking ahead on family walks to ensure no one stepped on the slugs (or “slucs” as she couldn’t yet say the word slugs) and visiting harbour seals at the local marina. It was these experiences that set a precedent for Charlotte’s immense passion for animals.

Charlotte began photographing birds in 2011, when a neighbourhood friend taught her how to look for the barred owls that lived in the forest surrounding the family cabin she spent every summer at. After that she was hooked, making it her mission to find and photograph all the birds on the small coastal island with a point and shoot her mother had gifted her. In the years following, Charlotte became more immersed in the world of wildlife photography and eventually upgraded to a DSLR camera and telephoto lens. Shortly after completing a Bachelor of Arts degree in Fine Art and English at Simon Fraser University, she moved to Vancouver Island. It was there that she became enamoured with killer whales and got a job working in the office of a whale watching company, hopping on tours everyday after her shift ended. Having a particular fascination with predators, Charlotte followed various paths that would bring her closer to understanding and working around these animals. She then went on to work at a bird of prey educational centre, helping with flying demonstrations and teaching clients about raptors, as well as doing bird abatement at a landfill site.

After a few years of exploring this field, and working in local cafes, she decided to go to school for adventure tourism to learn about wilderness guiding and survival skills. This intensive 9-month program challenged her notion of what she thought she was capable of and gained her a position working as a grizzly bear viewing guide in BC’s remote Knight Inlet. After a two seasons working as a guide, Charlotte has since shifted her focus towards running her own wildlife conservation art company called Owling Wolf. Her goals are to share her passion for art and animals, with a particular focus on mental health advocacy. Having long struggled with depression and anxiety, it is her goal to raise awareness and fight mental illness stigma by speaking openly and honestly about her struggles.
